The AfroMexican Journey: Yanga, Slavery, and Freedom exhibit explores the rich cultural heritage, resilience and creativity of Afro-Mexican communities.
Highlighting the legacy of Gaspar Yanga, who led one of the first successful slave revolts in the Americas, the exhibit examines the journey of African descendants in Mexico and their contributions to art, culture and social identity. Complementing the exhibit is an Art Talk Series, with internationally acclaimed AfroMexican artists that trace the migration of formerly enslaved Africans to Mexico through art and the two-day Juneteenth National Symposium: The Gullah Story – From West Africa to Mexico, which connects West African rhythms and cultural practices through ceremonial hymns and music performance. These events create a space for dialogue, reflection, and celebration of shared histories.
This exhibit serves as an educational and cultural platform to deepen understanding of AfroMexican identity and history, addressing themes of slavery, resilience and freedom. The exhibit features 50+ unique pieces spanning a dozen different mediums, showcasing artistic expressions of migration, freedom, and cultural preservation. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and preserving underrepresented narratives, fostering connections between African, Afro-Mexican and African American communities. Whether you’re an art lover, history buff, student, scholar, or looking for a new family outing, this exhibit offers a rich and immersive experience that celebrates culture, history, and resilience.
