This two-day event features a symposium with internationally acclaimed historians and experts, exploring the migration of Gullah culture from West Africa to Mexico, where Juneteenth was first celebrated outside the United States in the 1870s. Discover the overlooked narratives of the Southern Underground Railroad and the enduring connections between African American and Afro-Mexican communities.

Friday Evening Program: Experience the powerful voices of Gullah singers as they perform ceremonial hymns that originated in West Africa. These sacred songs, preserved across generations, have maintained cultural ties for special occasions such as weddings, funerals, and significant days like New Year’s Day. Their melodies honor traditions of resilience and unity, setting the tone for a meaningful Juneteenth celebration.

Saturday Highlights: Dive deeper into the Gullah heritage with a day of renowned historical and scholarly research presentations. AfroMexican Journey: Yanga, Slavery and Freedom

The AfroMexican Journey: Yanga, Slavery, and Freedom exhibit explores the rich cultural heritage, resilience and creativity of Afro-Mexican communities.

Highlighting the legacy of Gaspar Yanga, who led one of the first successful slave revolts in the Americas, the exhibit examines the journey of African descendants in Mexico and their contributions to art, culture and social identity. Complementing the exhibit is an Art Talk Series, with internationally acclaimed AfroMexican artists that trace the migration of formerly enslaved Africans to Mexico through art and the two-day Juneteenth National Symposium: The Gullah Story – From West Africa to Mexico, which connects West African rhythms and cultural practices through ceremonial hymns and music performance. These events create a space for dialogue, reflection, and celebration of shared histories.

This exhibit serves as an educational and cultural platform to deepen understanding of AfroMexican identity and history, addressing themes of slavery, resilience and freedom. The exhibit features 50+ unique pieces spanning a dozen different mediums, showcasing artistic expressions of migration, freedom, and cultural preservation. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and preserving underrepresented narratives, fostering connections between African, Afro-Mexican and African American communities.
